With over 25 years of nonprofit management experience, Louis Chicoine has successfully led Abode Services’ development into the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest agency providing housing and social services in five Bay Area counties.
Louis first joined Abode Services (then Tri-City Homeless Coalition) as the Program Director in 1993. At that time, the agency consisted of one small shelter program in Southern Alameda County that served 66 adults and children each night. Starting with his promotion to Executive Director in 1995, Louis guided the agency through almost two decades of responsible growth, building the capacity required to respond to the urgent needs facing homeless and low-income families and individuals in the Bay Area. Under his leadership, Abode Services has grown from offering a single shelter to providing more than 4,600 adults and children each year with housing and services. In the last seven years, Abode has re-housed over 6,200 homeless adults and children. In July, 2014 Abode Services was selected as the lead agency for the first West Coast Pay For Success project. The project is also the first to focus of ending homelessness for chronic homeless individuals in Santa Clara County.
His peers recognized Louis’ expertise and leadership by electing him to serve as a member of the Destination: Home Board of Directors and as the Past President of the Alameda County Council of Mental Health Agencies. Louis is often asked to speak and consult on methods to end homelessness and the execution of effective nonprofit management, in light of his thought leadership and experience on these topics.
Louis holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Master’s degrees in Social Work Administration and Pastoral Ministry.
